I’m going to show off my bird cred right now… A lot can be determined by a bird’s wings aspect ratio. What type of wings you have determines what kind of flight you specialize in.

Cas is usually drawn with high-aspect ratio wings, long and thin. Birds that have those types of wings specialize in long-distance soaring flight, e.g. albatrosses. I think it’s poetic that Cas has these wings in fandom, that he’s built for the long distances, spending months at the ocean (which is often violent), land only in sight every now and then. He has a long way to go before he gets home, but he’s got the wings to handle the job.
